The Cafe Mocha, also known by different spellings like Mochaccino, Mocaccino, or Mochachino, is a delicious way of mixing chocolate and coffee. Now I don’t know about you, but chocolate, in my coffee, sounds like heaven in my mouth! How delicious! Besides, when the weather starts getting cold and the leaves start to fall, a rich and creamy Cafe Mocha can be the perfect way to warm up and get cozy.

Let’s face it though, we don’t always have the time (or the means) to make that daily, or even weekly trip to the coffee shop to get that oh so perfect Cafe Mocha. Or we get the craving when we are at home and just don’t want to go out. Well I got you covered on that dilemma!

Once you see how easy it is to make this delicious coffee favorite at home, you’ll wonder why you didn’t learn how to make a homemade mocha sooner than now.

What Is a Cafe Mocha?

Well, a Cafe Mocha sounds complex, but I assure you, it is a very simple drink to make. A Cafe Mocha is a mixture of coffee and chocolate, and a few other basic ingredients you would use for your normal everyday cup of coffee. Most coffee shops make this with espresso coffee, and make it in an espresso machine. Those are expensive though, and most people don’t normally have one just hanging around their kitchen counter.

So we are going to make this with whatever coffee, and coffee maker, you have on hand or prefer.

You can make it two different ways, both of which are easy. One way being made with hot chocolate, and the other being made with cocoa powder. So let’s get right into the chocolatey goodness of this coffee favorite!

This is an extremely easy way to take a regular cup of coffee and turn it into a deliciously creamy, chocolatey, warm and snuggly morning delight that anyone would love to wake up to.

What Will You Need?

First you need your coffee. So go ahead and make your cup like you normally would. I like to use coffee roasted to a more medium-dark roast level with hazelnut flavor. I think the hazelnut chocolate combination is hands down delicious, not to mention hazelnut coffee is my favorite.

Also, if you want to make your Cafe Mocha taste almost as good as your favorite barista does, you can buy coffee beans roasted to an “espresso” like roast level. This will give your mocha that extra bold coffee taste for a Cafe Mocha that is both sweet and strong.

If you plan ahead, you can buy flavored coffee like hazelnut or chocolate raspberry and use that for your coffee base. This will add a great deal of flavor to your mocha!

Now we want to make the hot chocolate! You can do this two ways. You can make hot chocolate on the stove with milk, or if you’re short on time, you can use a hot chocolate packet. If you make it on the stove, you will not need to add any milk, heavy cream or half-and-half, since it has already been added (unless you want to add more).

You can also add flavors and spices to your milk. Some of these include coffee syrups like Torani or Monin, which are used in a lot of coffee shops. Both have an abundance of different flavors to use and can really amp up your morning cup.

If you are wondering what kind of milk you should use, (should you make this on the stove), ANY kind will do. Though I would suggest staying away from the skim milk, as that is a thinner liquid and may make your mocha taste watered down.

Once you have your coffee and hot chocolate planned out, you can grab some things to top your mocha when it’s done. This is where you can get creative with your drink! I like to top mine with whipped cream and some chocolate or caramel syrup. Others include adding cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, chocolate flakes, flavored creamers, flavored coffee syrups, or anything else that you may like to make your homemade Cafe Mocha extra special.

How to make a Cafe Mocha with Hot Chocolate:

Here is a simple Step by Step:

  • 1/2 cup of strong coffee OR 2 oz espresso. Make it with any kind of beans you like (preferably darker roasted), and any flavor you like.
  • 1/4 cup hot chocolate. If you are making your hot chocolate on the stove, you can start preparing it while your coffee is brewing. This way they will both be done at approximately the same time and no waiting is required.
  • Once your coffee and hot chocolate are done, mix them together.
  • If you are using a hot chocolate packet, add about 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of the mixture to your hot coffee and mix well (more or less to taste).

Note: If you are heating the hot chocolate on the stove, this is when you want to add any flavors to your drink. Adding it while your heating the milk will help it combine better.

  • Now you can add 1-2 tablespoons of your choice of milk, heavy cream or half-and-half to your mocha, mix well. More or less to taste.

Top with any desirable toppings you like!

Cafe Mocha With Cocoa Powder

If you don’t have any hot chocolate on hand, no worries! We can make this with some unsweetened cocoa powder you probably have sitting in the baking section of your pantry. Add a little sugar, flavor, and cream, and you have yourself a deliciously homemade Cafe Mocha!

What Will You Need?

First let’s make your coffee. Like said above, you can use whatever coffee, and coffee maker, you have on hand. I generally suggest a darker roasted coffee for any espresso based coffee drink, as this will give you the closest taste to real espresso drink.

Once you have your coffee decided, you will need to grab some milk, heavy cream, or half-and-half. ANY milk will do, though I would suggest staying away from skim milk, as this is a thinner liquid and may make your mocha taste watered down.

Next we will need some unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar (or any sugar substitute you may like).

How To Make A Cafe Mocha With Cocoa Powder:

Here is a simple Step by Step:

  • 1/2 cup of strong coffee OR 2oz. espresso. Make it with any kind of coffee you like (preferably darker roasted), and any flavor you like.
  • While your coffee is brewing, grab your cocoa powder, sugar (or sugar substitute), and any milk, heavy cream, or half-and-half you prefer.

You can also add flavors and spices to your milk. Some of these include coffee syrups like Torani  and Monin, which are used in a lot of coffee shops. Both have an abundance of different flavors to use and can really amp up your Cafe Mocha.

  • When your coffee is done and you have everything you need, now you can build your Cafe Mocha!
  • Add 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (or more or less to taste). I like my mocha chocolatey so I always add a bit more to mine.
  • 1-2 tablespoons of your preferred sugar selection (to taste).
  • 1-2 tablespoons of milk, heavy cream or half-and-half (to taste).
  • Mix all together and top with any toppings you like!

  1. I’m a very big lover of making use of the kitchen even though I fight over it a lot with my wife as she complains that I always end up littering the whole place with whatever I’m making. Making a mocha has been in my mind for long but I really didn’t know how to make it, thanks for this information, it’ll be very helpful.

    • Making a mess in the kitchen is the best part of cooking up something delicious!  I always clean as I go so I’m not left with a HUGE mess at the end.  I feel the end product makes up for the mess too though.

I’m glad you found this post helpful.  A lot of people feel some things are just too difficult to make on their own, when in reality, they really are not that complicated.

I just posted another recipe for White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha that might be of interest to you also.  It’s a nice twist on the original Cafe Mocha.  Feel free to check it out and let me know how it goes if you decide to make it!

  2. Hello, this is a very awesome piece and a very detailed one. I’m really happy I came across this as the information I’m getting from here is standard.I’ve actually been thinking that to make mocha at home would be a really difficult thing to do, little did I know that it is actually very easy. It is more surprising to see you can do it without chocolate too. I’m going to try out these steps and come back with feedback. Thanks for showing this to me

    • Yes Lizzy, it is very easy to get intimidated by all the fancy coffee drinks they make at the shops.  I assure you it is a lot easier than people think.

    • Hello Lisa!

I feel a lot of coffee drinks tend to intimidate people.  They feel they are too difficult to achieve at home and must go to a cafe.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  With a little patience and the right ingredients, anyone can make any coffee drink, with or without the “proper” machinery.  I’m glad you enjoyed my post and hope your family loves it also!

Thank you for your comment!  You are appreciated!
